Krobar Distillery Paso Robles

Krobar2_edited-1Krobar Craft Distillery was the inspiration of Steve Kroner of Silver Horse Winery and Joe Barton of Grey Wolf Cellars Barton Family Wines. Kroner and Barton’s idea was spirited 4 years ago by their mutual love of distilled adult beverages. Traveling to Kentucky they started by making small batches of distillations and experimenting with different grains, grapes and botanicals. After honing their craft they quickly joined the top ranks of Paso Robles budding distilled alcohol industry.

Krobar pours primarily whisky, some they produced in Kentucky and aged in Paso Robles and some made right here in Paso Robles. And in June of this year, 2016, they received a Gold at the Distilled San Diego Spirits and Cocktail Festival! They age their whiskys in charred New American Oak barrels which are smaller than the usual wine barrel. Why the smaller barrels??? Joe says the smaller barrel allows for more surface contact which concentrates the flavor.

Their gin is white grape based with added botanicals like Juniper Berry, Anise Seed, Coriander, and Green Pepper Seed.  They also brought home the gold at this years Paso Robles Mid State Fair competition for their Gin, Single Barrel Gin, and a Silver metal for their Neutral Brandy!

Until recently non-grape based spirits could not be sold in California tasting rooms. The revision of this law makes it now possible to taste and purchase in their tasting room. However the license required to sell distilled spirits is different than the one required for their winery so they literally cannot be poured or sold under the same roof. To find them you have to go behind Grey Wolf Cellars winery located on Hwy 46 West in Paso Robles.

It’s always a good idea at some point, to follow up your tasting with food. What could be easier than to eat at Grey Wolf Cellar’s very own Barton’s Kitchen, operated by Chef Jeff Wiesinger… or Chef Jeff.

Barton’s kitchen is now an official Poke’Stop. To celebrate this honor the newest item on their menu is the Spicy Ahi Tuna Poke Lunch Special. for only $10! I tried this today and it was deliciously light and fresh. The Black Truffle Potato Chips portion was generous and a perfect combination.
